Traditional mechanical electricity meters are only able to measure total electricity usage. Modern PowerSmart Home ‘smart’ meters record how much electricity is used in half hour periods and have an internal clock to record the time of day and date when the electricity is used.
To find out how much you may have saved using PowerSmart enter your electricity details into the calculator below.
Meter installations and upgrades
The new meters and PowerSmart pricing will be rolled out progressively over the next decade as part of a long term plan to help reduce the increasing peaks in electricity demand by spreading electricity consumption more evenly across the day. Federal and state governments have committed to installing smart meters to electricity customers around Australia in the years ahead.
EnergyAustralia is currently undertaking a program to replace existing meters with PowerSmart meters for all customers who consume above 15 Megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity per year. This is equivalent to bills more than about $2,000 a year with no off peak hot water.
PowerSmart meters are also now the standard installed when customers require a new meter, such as in new properties or where their electrical installation is being upgraded.
Customers in EnergyAustralia’s network area can also request the installation of a PowerSmart meter to replace their existing meter. In these cases, EnergyAustralia will provide the new meter free of charge, and some customers may also qualify for free installation.
If the meter at your home is planned for an upgrade in the near future, you will receive a letter from us in advance and we will also advise you of the PowerSmart Home rates that will apply.
